What is Chronic Pain Therapy, and is it Right for Me?

Chronic Pain Therapy Can Help You Get Your Life Back

Do you experience persistent chronic pain in your lower back, neck or shoulder that won't go away?

Have you seen multiple doctors and specialists with no real relief from your pain and symptoms? Living with chronic pain is exhausting, anxiety provoking, painful, and scary. If you think back, you might realize that you've had pain in different parts of your body for some time. You might have gone to see multiple doctors and specialists, undergone various tests and treatments, purchased a number of supplements, pillows, orthopedic devices to help ease your pain, but you haven't really received any real lasting relief from your pain.

Is there a name for what I’m experiencing?

There is a name for the pain you’re experiencing- Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) or neuroplastic pain/mind-body pain. Dr. John Sarno, who was a leading doctor and researcher of chronic pain conditions developed this term. He believed that chronic pain was psychogenic in nature, i. e. physical pain caused by unprocessed and repressed emotions. Often times people undergo all of this testing and see multiple doctors, and are told that there is no medical origin to their pain, or that they possibly have some sort of structural abnormality but there is no malignancy within the body causing this pain. For many, this is extremely frustrating and confusing!

Pain science is gaining momentum, and there's strong research and evidence that correlates stress, anxiety and depression being the trigger to chronic pain. Stress, anxiety and depression can cause physical symptoms, and for certain people this pain manifests in physical ways, including pain in their body, carpal tunnel syndrome, migraines and gastrointestinal issues, etc. The physical symptoms you are experiencing are REAL, and I am here to tell you that there is a way to live with relief from this pain OR pain free without being on medication for the rest of your life, making adjustments to your activities, and you can get out of the cycle of seeing multiple doctors every time you're experiencing a pain symptom.

Things can get better. Chronic pain therapy can help you develop techniques to reduce pain and break the pain cycle

I provide online therapy in Massachusetts to help people get relief from their ongoing pain. Often times when people seek therapy for their chronic pain they might have tried many other things to feel better. Living with chronic pain is absolutely exhausting. I can help. I provide therapy for chronic pain condition (i.e. mind-body conditions) utilizing concepts from Dr. John Sarno. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques, Psychodynamic therapy (talk therapy) to assist individuals with processing repressed emotions in a safe therapeutic space.

In our first few sessions, we will review your history, your history of chronic pain, and the role that anxiety and possible perfectionistic traits play in your chronic pain. A major component to treatment of chronic pain conditions is psychoeducation, regarding Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS) or neuroplastic pain. The next major component of my treatment with people with chronic pain conditions is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to bring awareness to fear based thought patterns, and Mindfulness-Based techniques to reduce stress on the nervous system. I also incorporate Psychodynamic therapy to help people access and process underlying/repressed emotions, as often times individuals with chronic pain conditions have emotions that they're often unaware of, and possibly past traumas as well.

There is hope! I have observed many people in my practice and in many of the online support groups that I follow, greatly reduced or experience a full recovery from their chronic pain using these methods.
